Roads Operator
Position Open until Filled.
Position Summary: The Roads Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of light and heavy equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of county roads, bridges, drainage systems, and other public infrastructure. This position will ensure that all work is completed in a safe, efficient, and high-quality manner in compliance with county and state regulations.
Essential Job Functions
- Operate heavy equipment such as graders, backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, dump trucks, snowplows, and other road maintenance machinery.
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance and repairs on county roads, including patching potholes, grading gravel roles, clearing debris, and maintaining culverts and ditches.
- Perform winter road maintenance, including snow plowing, sanding, and salting.
- Conduct daily inspections and basic maintenance of assigned equipment (e.g., oil checks, fluid levels, tire pressure).
- Ensure safe work zones by setting up signs, barricades, and traffic control as needed.
- Assist with construction projects, including drainage installations, minor concrete work, and signage placement.
- Maintain accurate logs and reports of work performed and equipment usage.
- Follow all safety regulations and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Perform manual labor as required, including shoveling, raking, lifting heavy materials, and working in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to be “on-call” during winter weather events to respond promptly to emergency snow removal situations.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations, such as winter storms or accidents, to clear roads promptly and ensure the safety of the community.

Preferred Talents
- Basic mechanical knowledge for conducting equipment inspections and minor repairs.
- Experience operating heavy equipment.
- Commitment to workplace safety and understanding of safety protocols related to machine operation settings.
- Clear and effective communication skills, including the ability to follow written/oral instructions and convey information to team members.
- Strong problem-solving skills to identify and address issues in a timely manner.
- Demonstrate quick reaction time to respond effectively to changing conditions, unexpected obstacles, or emergency situations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Valid CDL (Preferred).
