Mission Statement

The Boone County Veterans’ Service Office are committed to “Care for Him Who Shall Have Borne the Battle.” The office is a county agency required by state statute and funded by the County. Our mission is to provide assistance and support to Veterans’ residing in Boone County, their spouses, widows, family members, and dependent children through the pursuance of Veterans’ Benefits at the County, State, and Federal level, benefits earned, by virtue of the Veterans’ Military Service, by a Grateful Nation and the Great State of Nebraska. The Veterans’ Service Office shall represent Boone County and local communities and Veterans’ Organizations, and to serve as a liaison between the Veterans’ Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ (DVA), throughout the claims process.

The Veterans’ Service Officer serves under the direction of the Veterans’ Service Committee, appointed by the Board of Commissioners.

This Scholarship is for a student who served in the U.S. Army Special Forces and is now a full time student. The award is for $1,000.00.

County Veteran Benefits

• County Veterans’ Aid Fund (CVA). To meet immediate emergency financial needs.
• Flag Holders. For placement on the grave of every Veteran buried in Boone County.
• Homestead Exemptions. Assist with completion and filing with the County Assessor.

State Veterans’ Benefits

• Nebraska Veterans’ Aid Fund (NVA). For unforeseen emergency financial needs.
• Waiver of Tuition. For State College/University cost to qualified spouses or children.
• Discharges. Replacement of lost military service records (DD 214, NGB 22)
• Grave Registration. Report of grave location for Veterans’ buried in the State.
• Veterans’ Home System. Complete application for residency in a Veterans’ Home.

Federal Veterans’ Benefits

• Service Connected Disability Compensation
• Non-Service Connected Pensions. Veterans or Widows’.
• Education and Vocational Rehabilitation. Including GI Bill and disability retraining.
• Life Insurance. VGLI/NSLI or Disability.
• Burial Benefits. Grave marker application and burial allowance assistance.
• VA Home Loan Programs. Residential and improvement for handicap improvement.
• Health Care. VA Medical Center inpatient and outpatient services.
• Long Term Nursing Home Care. For Veterans’ rated at 70% or higher.
• Military Records. Discharge upgrades and location or service and medical records.

VETERANS’ SERVICES ARE ACCOMPLISHED BY:

• Serving as a trusted and respected partner in collaboration with other agencies when assisting Veterans’.
• Putting Veterans’ first as they were the first in defending our country.
• Being sensitive and helpful to the Veterans’ and or Dependents in their time of need.
• Providing assistance and counseling to Veterans’ and their families.
• Initiating and completing claims to be submitted to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Regional Office, Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs or appropriate office as required with accuracy and professionalism.
• Keeping appointments and being available to best provide services to Veterans’.
• Providing an office of competent and well educated staff.
• Identifying and supporting academic opportunities for education and training.
• Developing and promoting professionalism among fellow Service Officers.
• Displaying a “can do” attitude.

Military Discharges

In order to record a military discharge, you must obtain a Form DD 214. Military Discharge Records are filed in the County Clerk’s office. These records are not public information. An individual can only obtain his/her discharge information.
